3 Simple Ways to Better Smelling Realtor Open Houses

October 31, 2016 By Lisa Leave a Comment

Make your next real estate agent open house a success with delicious smells! Did you know that people notice smell first upon entering your realtor open house?

If the house smell is unfavorable when a perspective buyer enters, they won’t be too impressed from the start.

Simmer Cinnamon in a Pot for your Open House

A good smelling home should be a top priority when showing a home on open house day!

I’m sure you’ve heard about air fresheners and may have even used them. Bad news – they are not a great way to make a home smell good.

Recently, National Geographic The Green Guide stated that, “Many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat your nasal passages and temporarily block your sense of smell.”

Ewww, I wouldn’t want to be exposed to that, especially with all my allergies. Imagine if your potential home buyers leave with sinus problems or sneezing? Not a good sign.

There is a better way to make your home smell good and provide a wonderful experience for visitors.

Focus on natural ways to make a home smell good for your realtor open house. There are plenty of them and today I have 3 ways to give your buyers a natural aroma experience.

1 – Simmer Cinnamon in a Pot for your Open House

Who doesn’t love the smell of Cinnamon? It’s welcoming and natural and will be noticed by your potential home buyers.

This is not hard!

  1. Get some cinnamon sticks.
  2. Boil a pot of water.
  3. Put in one to three cinnamon sticks.
  4. Optionally, add cloves.
  5. Set it on simmer and open the doors to your realtor open house!

2 – Use Baking Soda on the Carpet Overnight

I do this at home on a weekly basis to freshen up the carpet. If your open house has an older carpet, this is a great way to absorb odors.

Just sprinkle the baking soda on the carpet. Let it sit for about a half hour and then vacuum it up. You can optionally let it sit overnight.

Baking soda is inexpensive and natural!

3 – Diffuse Essential Oils for Your Real Estate Agent Open House

You can naturally scent your open house with essential oils. Setting the mood is simple with some of the relaxing oils such as lavender or uplifting essential oils like citrus smells.

Here’s some favorite oils for diffusing:
