What You Need to Know About Essential Oils for Cleaning

January 16, 2017 By Lisa Leave a Comment

Have you ever considered using essential oils for cleaning? Making my own cleaning products for home was the best decision I ever made.

Using Essential Oils as cleaning products

A few years ago, I used strong smelling cleaning products that caused me many problems. From seasonal threats, itchy eyes, rashes and difficulty breathing, I knew that the toxic chemicals in those products were the cause.

Symptoms usually started around the same time that my house was smelling like a toxic waste dump!

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the air inside a typical home is 200–500 percent more polluted than the air outside mainly due to toxic household cleaning products.

I researched ways to make my own cleaning products. It cost less money and there are no toxic ingredients, which agrees with my healthy lifestyle. Using essential oils for cleaning are:

  • Safe for you and your family
  • Less expensive
  • Highly effective
  • Environmentally friendly

Plus, essential oils smell divine without awful fumes. Another thing I love about using essential oils for cleaning is a little bit goes a long way. Just a few drops is all you need.

Here are my 5 favorite essential oils to make your own cleaning products.

1. Lemon Essential Oil

Do you love the smell of lemon? Me too! It’s such a delightful, clean scent. It’s also a powerful addition to homemade cleaning products.

You can use lemon essential oils for freshening the air, cleaning the floor, deodorizing, degreasing stains, and brightening white clothes.

For example you can add a few drops of lemon oil to a gallon of water to mop your floor.

2. Tea Tree Essential Oil for cleaning (Melaleuca)

Tea Tree oil has so many uses! I love keeping a bottle around to use in the summertime as bug repellent! It’s fantastic as a daily shower spray or making a spray to clean the surfaces in your home.

3. Purify Cleansing Blend

The stovetop is often home to some of the biggest and toughest stains in the kitchen. Splatter from spaghetti sauce, leftover grease, and caked-on residue can quickly cover the stovetop, leaving you to scrub away the grime.

For a clean stove in less than 20 minutes, try this essential oil Stove Top Cleaner DIY that uses the doTERRA Purify Cleansing Blend, baking soda, and other ingredients to leave you with a sparkling clean stove. Not only will the stove top look great once it is free from stains and grime, but this mixture leaves behind the uplifting, clean scent of Purify essential oil.

4. Wild Orange

Add a little shine to any of your lackluster wood furniture with this essential oil Wood Polish. doTERRA essential oils like Wild Orange, Arborvitae, and Lemon oil can help restore shine to wood tables, floors, chairs, and more. Although wood furniture should only be polished every few months, neglecting to maintain and clean wood regularly will leave it looking dull, worn-down, and old.
