Are you looking for a DIY bug repellent to keep those bugs and insects out of your house? In the warmer months, I was getting my fair share of spiders, flies and fruit flies in the house.
The store-bought bug repellents did not interest me since I have animals and didn’t want to be around that toxic stuff myself. I switched to making my own natural bug repellent to keep the insects outside!
You can easily make a variety of home bug repellent on your own that really work. These are the recipes that I use the most.
Natural Bug Repellent for Your Home
When I was a kid, we used an insect repellent called, “Off.” As an adult, I used Deet. These bug repellents have chemicals and therefore I won’t use them ever again, no matter what the scientists have to say about.
Here are my favorite natural home bug repellent recipes. They are easy to make.
Keeping Spiders Out of the House – Natural Insect Repellent
Waking up each day to big, ugly spiders was getting to be a chore. I feel bad about killing them so I would catch them and put them back outside.
Finally I decided to prevent them from coming in the house. Here’s my Spider Deterrent Recipe.
Ingredients
- Glass spray bottle (I use these because they are great quality)
- Distilled water
- Peppermint essential oil
- Dash of dish soap
Directions
- Fill an 8 ounce bottle with water.
- Add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil.
- Add a dash of dish soap.
- Shake the bottle.
Go outside and spray around the windows and doors. You can also do the same inside.
Bye-bye spiders and no one got harmed in the process. Plus the peppermint smells divine!
Get Rid of House Flies with Natural Repellent
House flies are extremely annoying. If you’ve ever tried to chase one around with a fly swatter, you know what I mean!
The above recipe for spiders works for flies too as they don’t like peppermint. Spraying around entry areas will be a natural deterrent for flies.
You can also use the above recipe with Lavender or Lemongrass. Spray the entryways where they get in. You can also spray the flies.
Some of the essential oils that deter flies are:
- Lavender – flies hate this scent!
- Peppermint
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Lemongrass
Directions
- Fill a diffuser with water.
- Add a few drops of lavender (you can also add other oils).
- Place the diffuser near the entry where the flies usually get in.
The diffuser will fill the air with scents that flies do not like. This is a wonderful natural bug repellent that will have your home smelling wonderful!
It works for repelling mosquitos too!
Getting Rid of Fruit flies the Natural Way
One day I purchased bananas and didn’t know there were hundreds of fruit fly eggs just waiting to hatch! What a disaster! They were everywhere.
Here’s a natural recipe I used to get rid of the fruit flies.
I used a trap!
Ingredients
- Bowl
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Ripe fruit
- Plastic wrap
- Rubber band
Directions
- Fill the bowl part way with apple cider vinegar.
- Add a couple of small pieces of the ripe fruit.
- Cover with plastic wrap.
- Use the rubber band to secure it.
- Poke holes in the wrap.
- Fruit flies will love the scent and go into the bowl through the holes. They won’t be able to get out.
